Secretary of State Announces New Business Name Registration System

Pierre, SD - Secretary of State Chris Nelson today announced the availability of a new online registration system for fictitious business names. Previously, business name registration was only offered through county offices. This new system allows business owners to file fictitious names online with the Secretary of State. Business owners that prefer to file by paper can still file with the county Register of Deeds.

Fictitious business name registration is required in South Dakota for any person to engage in or conduct a business for profit under any name which does not plainly show the last name of each person interested in the business. This requirement generally applies to businesses that are not corporations, limited liability companies, or other legally organized entities.
